The planning for the future continued at Stark’s Park with another member of the squad following Ross Matthews and Tom Lang in committing their future to the club.

Robbie Thomson Goalkeeper and Coach

Goalkeeper Robbie Thomson has signed on with the Rovers until June 2023. The 27 year old first signed for the club in the summer of 2018 as the club started the job of getting back into the SPFL Championship. Robbie started his career at Celtic and has also played for Stenhousemuir, Airdrie, Rochdale, Cowdenbeath, Queen of the South, Hamilton and Falkirk.

In his time at Stark’s Park Robbie has made 45 appearances (41 of them starts) and finished last season a league champion as the club returned to the SPFL Championship.  Part of Robbie’s responsibilities next season will involve taking on the role of Goalkeeping Coach.

Davie McGurn

With Rovers returning to a wholly full–time setup from next season, current Goalkeeping Coach Davie McGurn will leave at the end of this season to focus on his full–time lecturing job, giving Robbie the chance to extend his coaching career into the professional game coaching the Rovers ‘keepers every day as well as in his own goalkeeping school, Pro Performance GK.

Manager John McGlynn said of his latest ‘recruit’: As of this summer Robbie will be on a playing contract, and the Goalkeeping Coach. Robbie has all the SFA qualifications to take on this role and has already been fulfilling the position this season.

Regarding next season, we will be completely full-time and as such David McGurn who is a lecturer at Cardonald College in Glasgow can’t give up the time to commit to a full-time role at the club.

We thank Davie for his contribution to the Rovers throughout his career, particularly this season and last as our goalkeeping coach and are delighted to have Robbie as a player for the next two years, where he will compete for the starting goalie spot as well as coaching our goalkeepers.
All of our goalkeepers have been working hard this season, and everyone can see that the match performances of Jamie MacDonald are up there with anything he has produced in his career to date“.
