Coming back together to talk about and remember sport.  Kirkcaldy Sporting Memories Club re-opens its doors.

Kirkcaldy Sporting Memories Club was suspended in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic. For the first time since then, members can meet again at Kirkcaldy Rugby Club in person!

At the Club, older adults come together to talk about and remember sport, alongside gentle physical activity – and find companionship while talking about a subject they are often passionate about. There are lots of laughs and many fond memories.

Gary Waddell, Sporting Memories Group Practice Coordinator says: “To be opening up again so that we can all come together in person is very special. Especially after so many extremely difficult months. To not be able to see each other at a time when social isolation has been increasing among older adults and mental wellbeing decreasing has been particularly hard.

At Sporting Memories, we have been really successful at staying in touch with our members in many different ways and couldn’t have done this without our amazing volunteers. But meeting up to socialise in-person has been very much missed. For many of our members, some living with dementia, depression or loneliness, meeting together for companionship and forming friendships is a lifeline.”

Gordon and Mark are volunteers at the Kirkcaldy Sporting Memories Club, and added: “We both became Sporting Memories Volunteers during the lockdown period, so have never experienced a face-to-face meeting. Whilst Zoom meetings have been a great platform for keeping in touch with some members there is nothing like having a chat over a coffee with members listening and sharing their love of sports in a relaxed environment.  As volunteers we are really looking forward to contributing and making a difference to peoples’ lives through the benefits of discussing key sporting events in person”

Kirkcaldy Sporting Memories Club meets every Wednesday from 10.30am – 12pm at Kirkcaldy Rugby Club and new members are very welcome.
