Fans Back Keeper for Hall of Fame

David McGurn will be inducted into Raith Rovers Hall of Fame later this year.

He joins Joe Baker as one of the main inductees at the 2015 show at the Adam Smith Theatre on Monday November 9.

Tickets to the show sold out within 24 hours – making it one of the fastest selling shows at the theatre in the last 20 years.

McGurn said he was  “absolutely delighted”  to be honoured.

The committee – Ally Gourlay, Willie MacGregor, Allan Crow and Alistair Cameron – were swamped with votes for the fans’ favourite to join other famous names in the Hall of Fame.

Joining the club in 2008 McGurn quickly established himself as the club’s number one and his whole hearted performances, maturity and experience has made him universally popular with the supporters at Stark’s Park – many of whom feel he should be playing at a higher level.

“I just can’t believe it,” said McGurn. “It would have been an honour enough just to be named as a nominee but to actually be inducted is just tremendous.”

Born in Glasgow in 1980, McGurn spent six years at Morton before signing for Rovers seven years ago and much to the supporters’ delight signed a two year deal to stay at Rovers last month.

“I love playing here, love training and really wanted to stay. It was just a case of sitting down with the board and working out a deal. It’s a part-time deal which suits me and suits the club I think. It’s changed a lot since I first joined but I’ve loved my time here.”

Committee member Ally Gourlay said he agreed with the public’s choice.

“We had a flood of entries for Davie, and one or two others as well, but he proved so popular that we wanted to put his name out quickly. Without doubt, he deserves this. He is one of the top three keepers in Rovers’ history along with Murray McDermott and Bobby Reid; in fact I think he might pass Bobby’s appearance record next season.

“Everyone knows how many points Davie is worth to the club every season and you can tell that he loves the Rovers as well. This award is thoroughly deserved and I’m delighted for him.”

McGurn added: “It’s going to be a great night and for me personally it will be really special.”

Fans can still nominate their own heroes to be considered for induction to the Hall of Fame.
