Supporting Men’s Health
In the lead up to Saturday’s match and beyond, we are working with NHS Fife, our Community Foundation and Andy’s Man Club to support men’s mental and physical health.
For too long, men’s health has carried a stigma. Many are still scared to open up, get checked, or admit when they’re struggling, whether that’s in their head or in their body.
Here’s the heartbreaking reality:
– Two men a day in Scotland die by suicide
– Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 54
– Men account for around 74% of suicides in Scotland
– 88% of people who die by suicide are of working age
– Around 37% of Scottish men have had suicidal thoughts due to stress
Looking after your health is not only about speaking up when things feel tough mentally. It is also about taking simple steps to catch physical problems early.
Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, and a simple test you can do at home can help identify symptoms early, often before you notice anything is wrong. When bowel cancer is found early, treatment has high survival rates of more than 90%.
If you have diabetes, regular diabetic eye screening can detect diabetic retinopathy and other eye conditions at an early stage. Spotting these changes early can prevent serious damage, including significant or even complete loss of vision.
Screening for an abdominal aortic aneurysm can find a weakness in the main blood vessel in your abdomen before it bursts. Early detection allows for lifestyle changes, monitoring and treatment if needed, making it much less likely to become life threatening.
These checks are simple, private, and could save your life. Checking in with your body is every bit as important as checking in with your mind.
We’re not health professionals, we’re a football club. But we’re a club that truly believes everyone belongs. If Stark’s Park is your escape on a Saturday, or you just need pointed in the right direction for support, whether that is for mental health, cancer screening, eye checks or other tests, we’re here.
This weekend a special Matchday Poster will highlight men’s mental health and Andy’s Man Club, who run weekly groups for men to talk.
The first 400 men over 50 through the home turnstiles, and 40 away fans, will receive a goody bag with small gifts, men’s health information leaflets (including details on screening programmes) and a raffle ticket for a half time draw, including a Rovers prize and a signed Airdrie shirt.
RaithTV will feature pieces with partners explaining the support they offer, how you can access help for your mental wellbeing, and where to find more information about physical health checks and screenings.
A huge thank you to the Aidan Sutherland Foundation for providing the RRFC bags, the 200 Club for sponsoring the half time raffle prize and to Airdrie for supplying the away raffle prize.
Together, we can end the stigma, encourage men to talk, get checked, and show that looking after your mind and body is a sign of strength, not weakness.
