A young Rovers side beat Spartans 3-2 last night at a rain soaked Ainslie Park.

A dozen Rovers and four trialists were involved as rain, thunder and lightning concentrated the fans in the stand. Grant Murray picked himself, playing alongside First Team Coach Laurie Ellis. Also featured were Laidlaw, Donaldson, Callachan, Vaughan and Matthews who had been involved in other first team pre-season games.

The Spartans side, which featured ex-Rovers, Danny Main and Mark Whatley, took the lead through a 19th minute Motion penalty. The Rovers equalised with a Murray downward header from a corner in the 28th. The storm arrived in the 40th minute and Matthews had a good run foiled by the home keeper just before the half.

Brown made it 2-1 to the home side running onto a great through ball. Matthews saw a lob go just over then Aitken hit the Spartans post. The home number 11 missed a good chance then Matthews saw the keeper fumble a shot wide. Rovers Trialist 15 showed good skill to set up Vaughan at the edge of the box. Lewis’s shot on the turn gave the keeper no chance – good play and a great strike. 2-2.

Main stretching fired over then Aitken was fouled in the box and Vaughan scored the penalty putting the ball in low to the left. 2-3

The Rovers trialists all did well. The number 15 unfortunately took a knock and left the field with 10 minutes to go leaving the Rovers a man short. This meant that the number 16 had to operate alone up front however he still looked a handful.

This was a good win and workout but those driving home probably weren’t able to think about the performance too much instead having to concentrate on the road due to the horrendous weather.

Rovers: Laidlaw, Bates, Donaldson, Murray, Ellis, Callachan, Mathews, Vaughan, Aitken, Robertson & Trialist. Subs: 3 Trialists.

Spartans: Bennett, Cenerrazzo , Blaikie, MacCuish, Main, Muhsin, Beesley, Motion, Henretty, Anderson & Beacher Subs: Whatley, Brown, Armstrong & Atkinson.
