Player Badges

This season, in conjunction with the RRFC Former Players Association, we are introducing a new tradition at the club. Every first team player who represents Raith Rovers will be presented with a Player Service Badge – normally after their first game.

The aims of the initiative are to:

• show our appreciation to everyone who represents us competitively
• celebrate each player’s first game with us with a badge presentation
• connect players past, present and future with a common item they can wear at formal club events
• build on the work of our Former Players’ community

Player badges will be presented in two ways:

New Players

All players will be eligible to receive their badge after their first competitive (League or Cup) game for the club. The intention is to present these straight after their first game, similar to how we present Man of the Match awards. If their first game is an away fixture, they will be presented with their badge after the next home game. (We may experiment with the presentation format as we settle into a routine).

Former Players

There are many former players out there who have represented us competitively over the years. We will not be sending badges out en masse to them all, but would instead like to formally present them in person as they return to the club. This may be done on the pitch at half-time, or in hospitality.

First Recipients

The badges were first introduced at this year’s Player of the Year Awards in May, with every player in last year’s squad being presented with a badge. Former Rovers player (and now Assistant Manager) Andy Millen was the first to receive his, along with Lewis Vaughan and Ross Matthews as the longest serving players in the squad.

Returning players Ross Millen and Kyle Turner, who have both already qualified for their badges, were presented with theirs at training on Friday.

The badges feature the club badge elements, a representation of the Main Stand apex sign, eleven stars (representing the on-field players) and “in service” in Latin.

Former Players Association

The club would like to thank John Greer, who runs the RRFC Former Players Association, for arranging the funding for this project. Donations were made by Rovers Down South, Rock the Rovers, Alex Penman, Willie MacGregor, Ruaridh Kilgour and the Former Players Association.

Established by much-loved club volunteer Ally Gourlay, who we lost to cancer aged just 53 in 2016, the Former Players Association keeps in contact with past players from the club. As well as regularly running events to keep players connected to the club, the association also ensures a regular stream of past players are welcomed back to Stark’s Park.
