Raith Rovers turned their attention to the top part of the Championship table on Tuesday night after overcoming Queen’s Park 2-0 in Glasgow.

A comfortable half for the Rovers saw them take the lead through a certain player’s 100th goal for the club around five minutes from halftime. Raith’s confident performance continued after the break, netting again to double their lead against a ten-man Queen’s Park.

Dougie Imrie made three changes to his starting line-up after the side’s 3-2 win against Morton three days ago. Scott Brown, Jack Hamilton, and Lewis Vaughan all got the start, with Ross Matthews and Kai Montagu taking places on the bench. Innes Cameron missed out entirely, alongside a substitute from last week, Jordan Doherty, although Paul Hanlon returned to the squad after a couple of weeks out due to injury.

Raith almost got off to the perfect start through Vaughan, but his effort from inside the box hit the bar in the 3rd minute. Dylan Easton was up next to have a go, but his curling shot narrowly went by the post just a couple of minutes later.

Queen’s Park settled somewhat, creating their first chance of the match through Callum Smith. The ex-Rover didn’t catch his volley right though, sending the effort over the bar from 15 yards out.

Raith continued to control possession and almost found the net in the 18th minute after Easton’s free kick was parried back out by Calum Ferrie. Josh Mullin was first to the loose ball, but his awkward attempt hit the woodwork in the end.

The Rovers eventually found their breakthrough in the 38th minute through Lewis Vaughan, with the Rovers man driving into the box through the Queen’s Park defence. However, his advance on goal was ultimately stopped in illegal fashion. Penalty Rovers.

Over 12 years ago, Lewis Vaughan scored his first-ever professional goal, coincidentally against Queen’s Park, firing in off the bar in the 86th minute after coming on as a substitute. Tonight, he scored his 100th in a Rovers shirt – calmly converting his penalty to put Raith into the lead.

Things went from bad to worse for Queen’s Park following Ricki Lamie’s high-speed challenge on Hamilton in the 42ndminute. Referee Kevin Clancy took a moment to analyse the situation, before dismissing Lamie with a straight red card –to audible protest from the home support.

Ross Matthews replaced Brown after the Rovers’ skipper picked up a booking in the first half before things got back underway.

Queen’s Park produced a few minutes of danger in the opening moments of the half, but Raith quickly got possession back on their side.

Vaughan wasted little time in notching his 101st Rover’s goal, firing away a close-range volley in the 56th minute to put Raith two goals up on the night.

Easton managed to get on the ball in some dangerous positions out on the left, but some cross-box passes alongside a couple of opportunistic strikes led to nothing in the end.

Imrie looked to his bench in the 68th minute, switching out Fordyce, Nsio, and Stevenson for Hanlon, Montagu, and Wilson.

A few more chances came along for Raith through their abundance of possession, but Mullin’s miss-hit volley, followed by Rowe’s off-target header, meant the scoreline wouldn’t be changed in the end.

One of Josh Rae’s only acts of the night involved producing a close-range reflex save to deny Aidan Connolly, but the raising of the offside flag ultimately meant that any goal would have been chalked off regardless.

Minimal stoppage time saw the full-time whistle sound soon enough, awarding Raith with their fifth win in just six matches. Moreso, the addition of three points now puts Raith mathematically clear of any relegation play-off spot, and places them just four points shy of fourth-placed Arbroath – the team they travel to face this Saturday.
