Greenock Morton vs Raith Rovers
Line Up
Report
Raith Rovers got their third consecutive point on the road on Tuesday after drawing 3-3 with Greenock Morton.
After a first half brace from Jamie Gullan, Morton fought their way back into the match and took the lead in the second half before Aidan Connolly equalised late on for The Rovers.
Barry Robson made two changes after a goalless draw away to Partick four days earlier. Lewis Vaughan and Scott Brown went straight back into the team after missing out through illness and injury respectively. Finlay Pollock was unavailable after being selected for the Scotland under-21’s, whilst Josh Mullin dropped to the bench.
Raith kicked the match off on an unusually mild evening at Cappielow. Morton made some early attacking in-roads after playing a flurry of passes into the Raith box, but The Rovers defensively mopped up well.
Morton looked set on playing out from the back and this led to a period of Raith pressure following a short goal-kick. Brown won the ball on the edge of Morton’s box before looking up for a pass. Gullan was there to receive as he tore into the area and the striker cooly worked the ball onto his right foot before fashioning a finish into the bottom right corner from around twelve yards out.
Raith kept the pressure up after their tenth-minute opener and got their second not long after. The team confidently moved the ball forward, which allowed Vaughan to play Gullan into Morton’s penalty area. The Raith striker was at a tight angle on the edge of the six-yard box, but this didn’t stop “The Hammer” from thundering a first-time shot into the top right corner of the goal – just ten minutes after scoring his first.
Raith had a few half-chances to add a third to their tally, but Morton had other ideas. Raith’s clearance from a corner allowed the hosts to play the ball into feet in the area and Nathan Shaw managed to get a shot on target which eluded Josh Rae in between the sticks.
Morton caused some more trouble for Rae as the end of the half drew near, but Raith managed to go into half time a goal to the good.
Raith had a promising looking start to the second half with some close efforts from Gullan and Easton narrowly flying by the post, but some tactical changes from Morton led to their second of the evening.
Grant Gillespie and Cameron Blues entered the field in the 63rd minute as part of a triple substitution and two minutes later the pair linked up to fire in Morton’s second of the match.
Morton completed their comeback in the 75th minute after a corner to the front-post was headed in by Tomi Adeloye. Any thoughts of Raith’s two-goal lead were now a distant memory.
Aidan Connolly had replaced Lewis Vaughan just before Morton’s third and Barry Robson utilised his bench further by putting on Aiden Marsh for Euan Murray in the 76th minute.
Raith won a free-kick in the 90th minute near the left-touchline and Gullan swung the ball into a crowded penalty area. The ball pinballed around the box before falling to Connolly in front of goal and Ryan Mullen’s point blank save only delayed the inevitable as Connolly bundled the rebound over the line.
Raith’s celebrations were minimal as they looked to reset for a winner, but a small amount of injury time meant the match was brought to a close soon after.
A point apiece on this occasion means Raith remain sixth whilst having one less game to hunt down the final play-off place in the Championship. Their next chance to close the gap comes this Saturday when the team travels to play 8th placed Hamilton.
