Airdrieonians vs Raith Rovers
Line Up
Report
Raith Rovers picked up a point away to Airdrie for the first time in over five years after playing out a goalless draw on Saturday.
The Rovers avoided a fifth straight defeat at the Excelsior Stadium, even after Airdrie almost found the net with the last act of the match.
Barry Robson made three changes to his starting eleven after losing 2-0 to St Johnstone a week prior, with Jai Rowe and Jack Hamilton taking the places of Shaun Byrne and Lewis Vaughan. Ewan Wilson was rotated for Lewis Stevenson, which marks his full Raith debut after joining on loan from Motherwell three weeks earlier.
Airdrie got the afternoon’s proceedings underway and managed to see off a few early Raith efforts – even despite a speedy booking for Lewis Strapp in the 5th minute.
Both sides started to work the ball into their respective final third, but each attack broke down at the final pass with neither keeper really being called into action at any point in the first half.
Jack Hamilton got involved often as he led Raith’s attacking line. The striker could have had his best chance of the afternoon in the 29th minute after a challenge from Matthews put him through, but referee Ryan Lee awarded Airdrie a free kick after deeming the tackle a foul.
A flurry of set-pieces made up the remainder of the half before the interval. Raith switched Paul McMullan for Richard Chin before the second half commenced, and an early period of pressure unfolded as Chin caused a bit of early attacking chaos.
Raith were inches from taking the lead in the 52nd minute after a long throw into the box eluded Airdrie’s defence. Hamilton turned the ball goalwards, but a goal-line clearance prevented his effort from finding the net. A scramble in Airdrie’s penalty area ensued, but the home side eventually cleared for good.
Raith continued to dominate the second half, but Airdrie remained a threat. Lewis Vaughan entered the field in the 58th minute and almost scored just ten minutes later as he bore down on goal. Connelly in the Airdrie net did well to meet him quickly though, and the ball ended up drifting harmlessly out for a goal kick.
Raith endeavoured in crossing, passing, and dribbling their way into Airdrie’s penalty area, but a golden chance just didn’t come along.
With injury time almost over, Airdrie’s Cole McKinnon unleashed a shot on goal from just inside the box. An unorthodox header from substitute Aaron Reid took the ball away from Rae, and time stood still as the ball deflected off the bar and down towards the goal line. The ball bounced on the right side of the line for the travelling Rovers’ fans however, and Rae scrambled to smother the ball.
That last gasp bit of action was the final moment of the match, with a chorus of unsatisfied grumblings filling the stadium upon the conclusion of a 0-0 draw.
Raith still sit second in the league on eleven points, although their immediate competitors continue to have a game in hand.
A return to Starks Park is pencilled in for next week, with third-placed Arbroath next up on the fixture list.
