Match Preview
Raith Rovers manager Dougie Imrie will take charge of his first league game in his new role this weekend, and it could scarcely be a tougher one, as the Kirkcaldy side head to Perth to take on league leaders St Johnstone.
The McDiarmid Park club have been caught up by Partick Thistle in recent weeks, with the Maryhill men now level on points with the Saints, although Simo Valakari’s outfit still lead the way on goal difference.
Rovers can possibly take heart from St Johnstone’s recent form, which has seen them win just once in their last four outings, while last weekend saw them eliminated from the Scottish Cup by League One strugglers Cove Rangers in what was arguably the surprise of the round.
Their home form in the league is impressive though, and if Rovers were to take all three points on Saturday they’d be the first visiting side to do so this campaign.
This will be the two sides third meeting this season, with St Johnstone coming out on top on both previous occasions.
Jamie Gullan and Josh McPake had the home side two up in a League Cup encounter in July before Jack Hamilton halved the deficit, and despite some sustained pressure from the away side, Makenzie Kirk sealed the win with a late third.
Their most recent meeting was a top of the table clash at Stark’s Park in September, when goals from Adama Sidibeh and Josh McPake saw St Johnstone register a 2-0 win.
That made it nine games in a row that Raith have failed to register a win against St Johnstone, a sequence they’ll be looking to put to bed in what will be the 100th meeting between the clubs in all competitions.
Saturday’s referee will be Lloyd Wilson.
