Match Preview

After a disappointing opening to our league campaign last weekend against Airdrieonians, Rovers will be hoping to get our first points on the board this Saturday, with Partick Thistle the visitors to Stark’s Park.

Ian Murray was relieved of his duties after that defeat, and unless someone is officially appointed before the game, then John Potter and Micky Cameron will be delegated with leading the side out in this one.

Saturday’s guests had a low-key start to their own league campaign, with a 0-0 draw against Morton in a match of few chances, with the best falling to The Ton’s Jay Emanuel Thomas in what was an uneventful contest.

The two sides last met in May, in what was a dramatic occasion under the lights at Stark’s Park, in the Premiership playoff semi-final second leg.

Raith were 2-1 up from the first leg, but Blair Alston’s early goal meant the tie was level again. Ross Matthews equaliser on the half hour mark nudged Raith back in front, but Alston’s second just before the interval made for a nervous second period, and with no more goals, the match went to penalties, with Lewis Vaughan scoring the decisive spot kick to send Rovers to the final.

That was the Jags first win at Stark’s Park in 11 attempts, with their previous victory coming way back in 2011.

After coming so close to reaching the final last term, manager Kris Doolan has spent the summer attempting to add the quality which may see them go a step or two further this time around.

Lee Ashcroft, who had such bad luck with injury after joining Rovers on loan from Dundee last season has been acquired at centre half, while in front of him, fellow ex-Rovers loanee, Kyle Turner has returned to Firhill.

The midfield has been the facet of the squad which Doolan has concentrated on the most, with Robbie Crawford being acquired from Morton, and Logan Chalmers signing up after leaving Ayr United.

Despite defeat last time out, Rovers hold the edge in the most recent encounters between the two, with five wins and two draws from the last 10 meetings.

Saturday’s match referee will be Peter Stuart.

Head-To-Head Record:

Raith Rovers wins: 55

Partick Thistle wins: 70
