Match Preview:
Saturday’s penalty defeat at the hands of Hearts may have ended Rovers chances of progressing to the next phase of the Betfred League Cup, but a much improved display means that the team goes into the match at Inverness Caledonian Thistle with a bit more of a spring in their step.
They’ll have their hands full on Tuesday evening though, against an Inverness side that have taken full points from their opening two matches in Group C, scoring seven goals in the process against Cowdenbeath and Cove Rangers.
John Robertson’s side go into the game knowing that a win against Raith will ensure they top the table, giving them safe passage to the next round, no matter what happens against Hearts in their final pool game.
History isn’t exactly on Rovers side in this fixture either, with no wins in their last 17 outings against the Highland team. Indeed, Rovers last win against Caley Thistle was way back in October 2000, when goals from Jay Stein and Ivan Mballa gave Rovers a 2-1 win in the First Division.
After an impressive second half of last term, Inverness will be looking to challenge at the top end of the Championship this season, with John Robertson bringing in a host of players who have impressed either at this level or stuck out in the division below.
Defenders, Jamie McCart and Shaun Rooney have been added from Celtic and Queen of the South respectively, while attacking midfielder Angus Beith has been acquired after he was released by Hearts. While Rooney has second tier experience with the Doonhamers, McCart impressed in the centre-half position while out on loan at Alloa, while Beith was one of Stranraer’s biggest attacking threats during his loan spell last term.
He could be joined in midfield by fellow new signings Brian Welsh and Tom Walsh, while former Livingston striker, Jordan White has made the trip north after he departed Barrow.
Tuesday evening’s match referee will be Colin Steven
