Match Preview
Raith Rovers will put league business to one side this weekend, as they travel to Glasgow to face Celtic in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.
It was a tie which presented Rovers with their sternest possible test, as they head to the home of the runaway Premiership leaders, who have recently reached the knock out stages of the Champions League.
Celtic go into this one unbeaten in seven games domestically since losing to Rangers at the start of the year, and on Wednesday evening they triumphed by six goals to nil against Dundee to ease 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership table.
Celtic fans may be reeling after the sale of Kyogo Furuhashi to Rennes, but the fact two other players have more goals than him this term, his direct replacement Adam Idah cost £9,500,000 and the club have just brought former star man Jota back in the January window, gives an indication to the Herculean task facing Barry Robson’s men on Saturday evening.
Raith’s last win at Celtic Park came in 1962, when a goal from Bobby Adamson was enough to seal a 1-0 win towards the end of a campaign which saw Raith Rovers finish above the relegation zone by just two points, eventually finishing 13th in the 18 team top flight.
The two clubs last met in this tournament just three years ago at the same venue and the same stage of the competition.
Liam Scales gave Celtic the lead at the interval, and despite keeping the game tight until the closing quarter of the match, goals from Giorgos Gioukamakis, Daizen Maeda and Nir Bitton sealed Celtic’s journey to the last eight.
Celtic reached this stage of the competition by beating Kilmarnock 2-1 in the last round, with goals from Callum McGregor and Daizen Maeda sandwiching an equaliser from Killie’s Bobby Wales.
Rovers have won two ties to get here, defeating Linlithgow by four goals to nil in the third round, before edging out Falkirk last month thanks to goals from Sam Stanton and Dylan Easton.
Saturday’s match referee will be Chris Graham.
Head-To-Head Record:
Celtic wins: 75
Raith Rovers wins: 17
Draws: 17
