Match Preview

After an enforced break last weekend due to not being in League Cup action, Raith Rovers will be looking to make it two wins in two when they travel to Somerset Park to face table topping Ayr United.

Scott Brown’s man have made a perfect start to their Championship campaign, sitting top of the table with nine points from nine, three points clear of the only other side with a 100% record, Falkirk, albeit they’ve played one game more.

After finishing third in their league Cup group, despite ending the section with three wins from four, The Honest Men have made a whirlwind start to their league campaign.

A 2-0 win on the opening day against Hamilton Accies was followed up with a sensational 5-0 triumph over Airdrie, in a game which could easily have finished with an even heavier score line in Ayr’s favour.

That was followed up with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Hamilton again on Saturday, in a game that was moved from later in the season due to both sides being idle. Incredibly, Saturday’s win makes this Ayr’s best start to a second-tier season since 1968/69, a campaign which ended with Ayr gaining promotion to the top-flight along with champions Motherwell.

After successfully guiding Ayr away from the relegation zone last time out, Brown appears to have upgraded the squad this time around.

Up front, George Oakley has impressed with three goals and two assists to his name already, while Scott McMann has added defensive nous at the back after winning the league last season with Dundee United.

However, it’s perhaps Romanian midfielder, Marco Rus who has impressed the most, with his goal of the season contender against Hamilton helping the Somerset Park side to all three points in that 3-2 victory.

Rovers were unbeaten against Ayr last season, winning three and drawing one of the four contests, and Rovers will be hoping for something similar on Saturday, in what will be the clubs 170th competitive meeting.

Saturday’s match referee will be Iain Snedden

Head-to-Head Record:

Ayr United wins: 56

Raith Rovers wins: 61

Draws: 52
