Match Preview

Raith Rovers play host to to Ayr United this Saturday, with the in-form Ayrshire side looking to continue their fine form which has lifted them up the table in recent weeks.

Scott Brown’s men are now unbeaten in six matches, with their last defeat in the league coming against Raith in the fixture between the two at Somerset Park back in August.

That sequence has taken the Honest Men up to fifth in the table, and a win on Saturday would see them leapfrog Rovers and into the playoff spots, despite playing a game fewer.

Raith do have a good recent record against Brown’s side however, winning three out of the last four meetings, while Ayr’s last win at Stark’s Park was a 4-0 victory back in March 2022.

The teams have had one meeting already this season, which Rovers won 1-0, with Dylan Easton’s long range effort in the opening few seconds enough to seal a fine win on the road.

We should probably expect a winner one way or another on the day, with just two draws in the last 18 fixtures between the two, with the last coming just before Christmas in 2023 in what turned out to be an astonishing evening at Stark’s Park.

Aiden McGeady had given United the lead in the 29th minute, only for Sam Stanton to equalise almost immediately.

Lewis Vaughan then handed Rovers the initiative just before the interval following Sean McGinty’s red card, and it seemed at that point that Rovers would build on their advantage in the second period.

However, a chaotic second 45 minutes saw Ben Dempsey and Logan Chalmers restore Ayr’s lead, only for Vaughan to peg them back with 10 minutes remaining.

Any thoughts of a grandstand finish for Rovers to go onto win the game were dashed as Akheem Rose made it 4-3 to the visitors, but Vaughan did complete his hat-trick in injury time to ensure a share of the points in what was an extraordinary encounter

Saturday’s match referee will be Duncan Nicolson.

Head-To-Head Record:

Raith Rovers wins: 64

Ayr United wins: 59

Draws: 52
