Match Preview
Raith Rovers head west this weekend, as they travel to Somerset Park to take on Ayr United.
Scott Brown’s side finished third last season but were eliminated from the playoffs at the first hurdle by Partick Thistle, and with eight new arrivals over the summer, they’re tipped to be in the playoff hunt once again at the very least.
All of the new additions will form part of Ayr’s defensive unit or midfield, with goalkeeper David Mitchell coming in from Partick Thistle, while Liam Dick, who of course spent four years at Stark’s Park may line up in front of him in a new look defence which could also include Kevin Holt and Shaun Want after both players returned to Scotland after a spell in Ireland.
In the middle of the park, Partick Thistle were raided again for Stuart Bannigan, while Dom Thomas was the headline signing of the summer for the Honest Men after he was acquired from Derry City.
United have also recently announced a co-operation agreement with Celtic, which has so far seen youngsters Kyle Ure and Jude Bonnar arrive on loan.
Just like Raith, Ayr United started their season with a one all draw, with their match against Arbroath kicking the Championship season off on the Friday evening.
Jamie Murphy had given Ayr an early lead, and at that point it seemed like the Gayfield side were in for a long evening, but Nikolay Todorov’s late equaliser gave the Lichties a deserved share of the spoils.
In the five meetings between the sides last season, the home side always came out on top, with Ayr winning both league meetings and the Challenge Cup tie at Somerset Park, while Raith were the victors in the two fixtures at Stark’s Park.
Dylan Easton was the match winner the last time the two sides faced each other in April, with his goal of the season contender the only goal of the game.
Saturday’s referee will be Kevin Clancy.
Head-to-Head Record:
