Match Preview

Raith Rovers face their third crucial home match in seven days this Friday evening, with Ayr United the latest visitors to Stark’s Park.

The game was moved to the Friday due to Scotland’s clash with Japan kicking off at 5pm on Saturday, and Rovers will be hoping to take all three points as they look to move away from the bottom of the pack.

They had an opportunity to do that on Tuesday night, only to lose out to Partick Thistle by two goals to nil, but a win here would see Raith leapfrog Ayr and Queen’s Park in the table, although the Spiders do play on the Saturday.

Friday’s opponents have now gone six league games without a win, and while they seemed likely playoff candidates just a couple of months ago, that winless run now sees them sit five points behind fourth placed Dunfermline Athletic.

The Honest Men’s last league win was back in December, and it came against Raith in a 2-1 win at Somerset Park.

Ben Dempsey and Anton Dowds had the home side 2-0 up, and while Lewis Vaughan handed Raith a lifeline with 13 minutes left, they couldn’t manage to snatch a late point.

Ayr won more comfortably the last time the two sides met at Stark’s Park in October, when goals from Mark McKenzie and Jamie Murphy saw Ayr take all three points in a 2-0 win.

Rovers did come out on top in the first encounter of the season though, when an early long distance strike from Dylan Easton saw Rovers win 1-0 in Ayrshire.

Friday night’s match referee will be Colin Steven.

Head-To-Head Record:

Raith Rovers wins: 64

Ayr United wins: 61

Draws: 52
