Match Preview

Raith Rovers start their Scottish Cup campaign at home to Alloa Athletic this weekend, and they’re doing so with a new man in the dugout, after Dougie Imrie was confirmed as the new manager on Tuesday.

While the Wasps may be a division below Rovers, they’re coming into this one in fine fettle, unbeaten in nine games and sitting third in the League One table, five points behind leaders Inverness Caledonian Thistle, a team who they drew one all with on Tuesday evening.

It’s been four years since these two sides last met, when they played out a 0-0 draw in the League Cup group section, with Rovers winning on penalties thanks to Jamie MacDonald saving Connor Sammon’s spot kick.

Despite the dropped point, the result was enough for Rovers to win the group ahead of Livingston and progress to the knockout stages, where they defeated Aberdeen at Stark’s Park before going down to Celtic in the quarter finals.

You have to go back 15 years to find the last time the two sides in the Scottish Cup, and it was a day to forget for the Kirkcaldy club back in November 2010 at Recreation Park.

John Baird had given Rovers the lead, but two goals from Kevin McDonald and a strike from Stuart Noble handed Alloa an impressive lead, and despite Grant Murray pulling a goal back, McDonald completed his hat-trick to send Athletic into the next round.

Indeed, Andy Graham’s side have something of a hoodoo over Rovers in the cup, eliminating Raith the last four times they’ve been paired together.

Rovers one and only win over Saturday’s opponents in the competition was a second round victory back in 1962, a season where Rovers made it all the way to the semi-final before losing to Celtic.

Saturday’s match referee will be Ross Hardie.

Head-To-Head Record:

Raith Rovers wins: 59

Alloa Athletic wins: 36

Draws: 24
