Match Preview

Raith Rovers are in Scottish Cup action this Sunday, as they head to Pittodrie to take on cup holders Aberdeen in the Fourth Round.

Peter Leven will be hoping that his side don’t befall the same fate as the English FA Cup holders Crystal Palace, who fell at the first hurdle of their defence last weekend against sixth tier Macclesfield.

This is Levens’s third spell as caretaker boss at Aberdeen and comes after Jimmy Thelin left the club at the start of January following a loss to Falkirk.

The former assistant boss could barely have had a tougher start to his latest spell at the helm, with his two games both coming against an in-form Rangers side who run out comfortable 2-0 winners in both matches, extending Aberdeen’s winless run to seven matches in the process.

Rovers too will be looking to get back to winning ways, with just one win in their last five outings, and while an away trip to one of the biggest teams in Scotland will provide an onerous task, they can take some encouragement from their last trip to Pittodrie on Scottish Cup duty back in February 2010.

That encounter was a Fifth Round replay after the two sides had drawn 1-1 at Stark’s Park 10 days previously. Indeed, with just seconds remaining it looked like Raith would be progressing at the first time of asking thanks to a goal from Iain Williamson, but Gary McDonald’s last gasp equaliser meant the sides would have to meet again and it felt like Raith’s best chance was gone.

Incredibly however, a much depleted Rovers team won 1-0 at the second time of asking thanks to a close range goal from Gregory Tade on a famous evening for the Kirkcaldy club.

Rovers also have a more recent scalp over the Dons too, with a 2-1 win at Stark’s Park in the Second Round of the League Cup in August 2021.

That result looked highly unlikely when Jay Emmanuel-Thomas had given the visitors an early lead, but goals from Ethan Varian and Dario Zanatta ensured Raith’s surprise passage to the Quarter-Final.

This weekend’s match referee will be Kevin Clancy.

Head-To-Head Record:

Aberdeen wins: 53

Raith Rovers wins: 33

Draws: 17
