Match Preview

After securing second place in the Championship last weekend with a 0-0 draw with Partick Thistle, Raith Rovers will be looking to get back to winning ways, when they head to Inverness to take on Duncan Ferguson’s Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

The former Dundee United, Everton and Newcastle forward took over the club in September with the club in relegation trouble, and after last week’s 1-0 win over Queen’s Park, they’re now two points outside the relegation zone, with the opportunity to go five points clear, if they can win before the Spiders play Arbroath at Gayfield the next day.

Raith on the other hand need a win to exert any pressure on Dundee United at the top of the table, but with Jim Goodwin’s side six points clear with nine to play for, it would take quite the turnaround for the title to end up in Kirkcaldy.

It had taken 23 years for Rovers to defeat Inverness over 90 minutes, but they managed two wins in succession this campaign.

A late Jamie Gullan goal in September was enough to take all three points when they met at Stark’s Park, and Rovers left it late again in December, winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Lewis Vaughan in the 86th minute, and a Jamie Gullan penalty in the 94th.

Rovers were unable to make it three wins on the spin in January however, when an Alex Samuel hat-trick saw the visitors win 3-2 at Pratt Street.

Friday night’s match referee will be Euan Anderson

Head-To-Head Record:

Inverness Caledonian Thistle wins: 24

Raith Rovers wins: 9

Draws: 8

On behalf of the Ross Matthews Testimonial Committee, we are delighted to announce that after 11 years as a professional Rovers player, Ross Matthews will celebrate a Testimonial this year.

The Testimonial will consist of three events:

  • Golf Day
  • Match
  • Brunch

The Committee is now working hard behind the scenes to organise these events, and we will release more information on each as aspect gets sorted.

Ross has made 282 appearances for Raith Rovers and scored 18 goals in his time. This puts Ross in 31st place in the all-time Raith Rovers appearance list.

One of our own as a graduate of the old Raith Rovers Youth Academy, he signed a two-year apprenticeship in May 2013. His first appearance then came in a pre-season friendly against Sheffield United in July 2013.

Ross made his first start against Dumbarton on the last day of the season on Saturday, 2nd of May 2015. The game finished 2-2. Two weeks later, Ross was offered and signed a two-year contract.

Within the first three months of the following season, 19-year-old Ross had played at both Ibrox and Parkhead for Raith Rovers and started at home against Hibs. Manager Ray McKinnon liked to choose Ross Matthews for the big occasions.

Ross then established himself as a first team regular, going on to make his 150th appearance against Stranraer in the 2018/19 season.

He was also part of John McGlynn’s team that won promotion back to the Scottish Championship in 2019/20.

In 2022/23, Ross played a pivotal part in Rovers’ Challenge Cup win, scoring a wonderful goal in the Semi-Final against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park. He deputized for the suspended captain Kyle Benedictus, wearing the armband in the Final win over Queen of the South.

Ross then suffered an injury that kept him out of action for just short of two years. His last start for the Club came against Hamilton on the 23rd of March 2022 in a 2-0 win at New Douglas Park before he returned to the matchday squad for the 4-3 win over Partick Thistle on the 8th of December 2023.

He then returned to action in a Fife Derby win over Dunfermline on the 2nd of January 2024.

Since breaking back into the team this season, he has shown his class and quality both on and off the pitch.

Well done, Ross, and thank you to the Committee for all the preparation and organisation that is taking place to ensure Ross has a fantastic and well-deserved testimonial year.

Match Preview

Tuesday evening’s 3-1 loss to Airdrie means that Raith Rovers require snookers to win the Championship title, but with Partick Thistle the visitors this Saturday, they know a point will be enough to secure second place in the league, and secure a highest league finish since the 2010/11 campaign.

Kris Doolan’s side come to Stark’s Park in decent form, with just one defeat in seven matches, although that solitary loss came against Rovers last month.

The Jags have a six point cushion over fifth placed Dunfermline, and just two over fourth placed Airdrie, so still have some work to do to secure their place in the end of season playoffs, and with Airdrie, Ayr and Dundee United coming up after this weekend, they could face a nail biting finale to the campaign.

Rovers have a good record in this fixture, and especially at Stark’s Park, where the Maryhill side haven’t recorded a win since March 2011, with Raith chalking up a sequence of nine games unbeaten since then.

They’ve also taken seven points out of a possible nine this term, with some memorable games in the three so far.

Rovers came back from a two goal deficit in the first league game in August, when goals in the last seven minutes from Dylan Easton and Kieran Mitchell securing a late point.

They came back again at Stark’s Park in December too, when they found themselves trailing 3-2 with 10 minutes left, despite Daniel O’Reilly and Dylan Easton earlier giving Rovers a 2-1 lead. However, goals from Callum Smith and Sam Stanton earned Rovers a thrilling 4-3 win.

There were far fewer goals at the last meeting in March, when a solitary effort from Euan Murray earned Rovers a 1-0 win at Firhill.

Saturday’s match referee will be David Munro.

Head-To-Head Record:

Raith Rovers wins: 53

Partick Thistle wins: 70

Draws: 40

Match Preview:

After the disappointment of Tannadice last Saturday, Raith Rovers start a huge seven days this weekend, welcoming Ayr United to Stark’s Park.

That 2-0 loss to Dundee United left Rovers four points behind them, albeit having played a game fewer, and they now play three homes game in a week, as they look to close that gap.

Scott Brown’s Honest Men are first up, and if the other match-ups between the two are any indication, Saturday’s game could be both an exciting one, and a close-run thing.

Raith won 2-1 at Somerset Park in September, with two goals from Dylan Easton ensuring the three points travelled East.

The two sides met as Stark’s Park just before Christmas, and it turned into one of the most thrilling games of the season.

Rovers appeared to be in control at the interval, leading 2-1 against 10 men thanks to goals from Sam Stanton and Lewis Vaughan, but it took a hat-trick from Vaughan just to rescue a point, after Rovers almost contrived to throw the game away in the second period, eventually scraping a 4-4 draw.

The most recent fixture in February was somewhat more straightforward, with goals from Zak Rudden and Vaughan handing Rovers another 2-1 win in Ayrshire.

Ayr’s form has been somewhat inconsistent since new boss Scott Brown took the hot-seat, however, they go into this one on the back of a fine 2-1 win over Airdrie last weekend, while their last four matches away from Somerset Park have seen them take three wins, the best run of recent away form in the league.

Saturday’s match referee will be Lloyd Wilson.

Head-To-Head Record:

Raith Rovers wins: 60

Ayr United wins: 56

Draws: 52
