Match Report

New Central Park, Kelty, 1st February 2017

Tonight’s teams had a balanced look with new signing for the Rovers David Syme playing at right CB and Cowdenbeath giving the yearlong injured Kenny Adamson a second half run out.

The young Rovers came out of the traps eager to press the Cowdenbeath defence with McDonald and Bell overlapping on the left and Kyle letting rip from outside the area to test Donoghue who gathered low to his right.

Minutes later Osei took advantage of an error due to a high bounce on the plastic pitch and fired the ball in low at the near post which the keeper gathered.

On 8 minutes Bell and Osei combined in the Cowden half Yaw found Thorsen on the right and he quickly crossed into the box where Johnny Court stroked the ball into the net from close range 0-1

From the restart Rovers threatened once more, this time Stevenson’s free kick was turned round the post for a corner, this was quickly taken and the ball found Johnny Court who smashed the ball home from 6 yards 0-2

The game now had shades of Deja vu when a slightly more experienced Rovers side put seven goals past our hosts, this was not to be as the young Cowden players pulled up their socks and looked to reduce the deficit.

Muirhead danced down the left and hit a dipping shot which beat the Trialist keeper and landed on the top of the net, this was followed up with a Kellichan free kick which looked to have glanced the top of the bar as it sailed over the wall.

The Wee Brazil finally reaped reward for their pressure where from a corner the ball rattled about the six yard box but Hamish Thomson hit the ball into the net from three yards 1-2

Cowdenbeath enjoyed a spell of possession which looked like the equaliser was pending, however the Raith defence stood fast and with some coaching from the side-lines settled the game down to their pace.

Newbie Syme managed to find himself out of position on the half hour where his delightful chip from inside the half deceived not only the Cowden defenders but Court and Osei as well the ball being cleared by the alert Donoghue.

Rovers utilised the remaining minutes of the half in Cowden territory, Stevenson came close with a couple of Free kicks, Watson, Court and Bell troubling the keeper and side net with close range efforts, topped off with a sublime chip from Thorsen finding Yaw in the box but his lob was just enough to go over keeper and crossbar.

The second half started quietly and took nearly 10 minutes to warm up when Cowden’s Thomas came close when his shot was deflected for a corner, the rest of the game could have been a goal fest were it not for missed opportunities.

Bell dodged past his marker to shoot narrowly wide, from the clearance Osei ploughed down the right and earned a corner, from which Court and Osei both had efforts blocked.

Moments later Yaw raced down the right and found Stevenson with a cross only for his shot to drift just past the post. New signing Syme got into the action with the next foray, getting onto the end of a corner and seeing his header blocked at the back post.

Cowdenbeath were far from pegged back, but weren’t the threat that the Young Rovers posed. Bell, Osei and Dall had shots well saved by Donoghue and at the other end Adamson came close with his free kicks.

The last five minutes saw Cowden down to ten men through injury and having used all of their substitutes had to rejig defence limiting any further attack, this worked as Jack Smith had the only realistic shot blocked.

Rovers move into second place in the league two points behind leaders Berwick, whom we play next week, this will be a cracker.
