Match Report

Indodrill Stadium, 26th September 2016

On a chilly and wet night that welcomed autumn Rovers U20’s took to the field to build on their positive second half performance in the Youth Cup against Hamilton last Friday night.

The match opened with exchanges by both sides notably with a Collins header and a Stevenson rocket, both going wide of the target.

The Rovers number 9, Trialist G to you and me had the first of many attempts at goal, his first on 28 minutes from 25 yards.

With barely a minute having lapsed, Andreas Thorsen had the ball at his feet on the right of the box and calmly slotted the ball past the diving keeper to just inside the back post.  0-1

Alloa had a spell of pressure after the goal as they flooded the box for a free kick on the left, the ball finally cleared by Thorsen, moments later the Alloa number 8 saw a fine shot deflected just wide of goal, the resultant corner cleared after a bout of ping pong in the box.

On 41 minutes Euan Valentine broke down the left and hit a sublime cross which Jack Smith headed over the keeper form 12 yards. 0-2

Just before half time Alloa had the ball in the net, however it was chalked off for a foul on the keeper, Trialist A had done well to block a wicked shot and did well to gain control when the attacking Alloa player kicked the ball from his grasp.

HT 0-2

At half time Alloa made a double substitution in an attempt to claw something back, however their optimism was short lived.

On 48 minutes Rovers went forward in numbers, the ball fell to Smith whose shot was parried by the keeper only to spin wide right to Andreas Thorsen who made no mistake and hammered the ball into the net from a tight angle. 0-3

Alloa did not let the scoreline get them down as the bench encouraged them to get up the park, resulting in good efforts by their numbers 9 and 14 both coming close with shots from outside the box, it wasn’t one way traffic as Ryan Stevenson forced out the best in the Alloa keeper with a dipping shot from 30 yards.

It was on the hour mark that the hosts finally had the stuffing knocked out of them when Jack Smith strolled through the Alloa defence who looked like they had fallen asleep, 1 on 1 with the keeper he slotted low to the right and despite the keeper getting a touch, the final outcome was never in doubt. 0-4

The match played out with several exchanges of note, Trialist A pulled of several great saves and looked confident throughout, not to be left out for praise was Trialist G who harried the defence all evening.

The last minutes of the game saw a queue of Rovers players wanting to increase the lead, Trialist G then Watson and finally Stevenson had great efforts well saved by the Alloa keeper.

Despite the scoreline Alloa were not poor and had a few chances of their own, however Raith dominated the game and should’ve added a few more goals to their tally.

The guys have the first points on the board and have cancelled out the negative goal difference from the first game of the season against Forfar.
