Match Report

Starks Park, 6th September 2016

The under 20’s began their Development League campaign with David Bates on loan to Rangers and the duo of Johnny Court and David McKay loaned out to Montrose.

Notable players who started were Joel Coustrain, Andreas Thorsen and ‘old boy’ Craig Easton who had 45 minutes at centre midfield.

On a sultry September evening the spectators had to cope with the midges and on the park the players a light drizzle which came and went 3-4 times over the game.

The match started briskly with Joel Coustrain hitting the ball over the bar with a speculative shot from 25 yards and at the other end, Martyn Fotheringham was denied at the back post from a low cross from the right corner.
The game opened up for the Rovers on the 18th minute mark with a similar move which ended with Ben Sivewright poking the ball into his own net from a couple of yards. 1-0
Fotheringham and Ryan Stevenson had chances at either end and on the 32nd minute Rovers doubled their advantage.
Fionn McLeod Kay rattled the ball off the legs of the Forfar keeper, the rebound spun to Trialist F who slotted the ball under the diving keeper who was struggling to recover from the first shot. 2-0

The celebrations had barely settled when Forfar began a move down the right which culminated in a cross to the back post; Trialist B did well to clear but only to the advancing Max Avollio who knew nothing about the ball until it ricocheted off him and into the back of the net.

2-1 Half time.

The second half opened with Fotheringham and Thorsen having great opportunities at either end but was topped by Sivewright making amends for his earlier blunder when, from 30 yards out, hit a daisy cutter through a sea of legs inside the near post. 2-2

Later, on 56 minutes, substitute Collins hit a rocket which spun off the defender and into the keeper’s arms.
Shortly after Thorsen took a knock, which set an unfortunate pattern for the rest of the game.
The young Rovers players seemed to be picking up knocks which ended up with the side finishing with 10 men after using all the subs.

The athletic Forfar side picked up the pace after the equaliser with identical goals on the 62nd and 68th minutes, Gill then Stirton scoring back post headers from corners. 2-4

Although it wasn’t a dirty game, Ryan Stevenson picked up a caution for a foul with 20 minutes left on the clock.
As mentioned earlier Rovers were a man down and with 5 minutes left Forfar capitalised when MacIntosh left footed the ball into the net from the middle of the box to create a three goal advantage. 2-5

Forfar kept up the pressure and despite Aitken missing a sitter on 90 minutes, Fotheringham completed the rout with an injury time goal just before the whistle. 2-6 Full time.
