Starks Park, 25th April 2017

Young Rovers romp to the title on an eight game winning streak.

Rovers had to come from a goal down to overcome a decent Livingston side at the third time of asking to win the 2016/17 Development League East title having previously drawn 2-2 and 3-3.

From the whistle, Livingston went on the rampage with Ogilvie and Hamilton threatening with a header and a long-range shot, Ogilvie was a thorn in the flesh setting up Sampson with several attempts on Rory Brian’s goal.

Rovers fought to contain the visitors with Osei, Thorsen and Watson testing Gary Maley defending the North Stand goal, but it was a cross from Collins which was picked off by Maley and Livingston drove quickly upfield and won a corner.

From the corner, Knox’s cross was met by Watson whose clearance was picked up by Ogilvie his cross in found Kyle Sampson who hit the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards 0-1

Rovers kicked off the second half clearly boosted by Craig Easton’s half-time talk, they took the game straight to the visitors testing the Livingston defence on the wings and through the middle with slick passing.

Osei, Dall and Stevenson had shots apiece which Maley did well to save, from a Maley clearance a rare slip from Brian saw our one-time stand in keeper Josh McDonald make a goal-line clearance to prevent Livi doubling their lead.

Rovers pressed the Livingston defence with shots from Valentine and Osei then finally the spell of pressure paid off, James Collins found Ryan Stevenson on the left side of the box, he jinked past his marker, dropped a shoulder and hit a peach of a shot into the postage stamp corner from 16 yards 1-1

The next twenty minutes saw both sides trade shots and just when the crowd thought that a draw would suffice to allow the celebrations to begin, Rovers won a free kick 20 yards out on the left, Stevenson chipped the ball over and Andreas Thorsen rose like a salmon and powered the ball into the net with a header from 8 yards out 2-1

The 300 spectators shared in the celebration on the pitch knowing that the lads had completed their task, crossing the line in style with eight wins on the trot.

Given the makeshift start to the season with hardly any players signed up and a heavy reliance on trialists, Craig Easton has done a fantastic job with an obviously talented bunch of lads, turning them into champions, congratulations to you all.
