Match Report

The Indodrill Stadium, January 22nd 2018

Alloa Athletic u20’s 2 (Cunningham 56, 88) – 1 Raith Rovers (Stevenson 53)

Rovers lose their first league match since October ending a run of six games undefeated.

The first half had an air of the two sides content to size one another up with neither team gaining the upper hand in terms of possession.

Rovers first foray came from a Dall run on the left, his cross found Osei whose header was cleared at the back post.
It took nearly ten minutes for the next action as the two sides cancelled one another out, Fell and Cunningham played a one-two, the latter forcing Brian to stretch and tip the ball out for a corner.

Chances were sparse throughout the remainder of the half, Greene coming close for Alloa with a lunge at the back post which he flicked wide.
Thorsen and Osei played a delightful one-two with Andreas finding Stevenson free outside the area, his shot going narrowly past the post.

Another passing move from Bell to Swanson who laid off to Osei, his effort being blocked by Wylie.
The second half stuttered and stopped as the sides continued to stymie the game, however the deadlock was broken on the 53rd minute, from a corner, the ball rattled around the box and fell perfectly to Ryan Stevenson who hit a left foot rocket from the edge of the box straight into the top left corner of goal 0 – 1

The equaliser came three minutes later, again from a corner, the ball flew across goal and after a couple of stabs at the ball Cunningham rifled the ball across the diving Brian into the far corner from 6 yards 1 – 1

On the hour Craig Easton rang the changes, McHattie and Dall made way for Valentine and McCann, McHattie getting another run out to gain full fitness.
Minutes later another change was made, Thorsen who had taken a leg knock minutes earlier, seemed to go over on his ankle and was replaced by Trialist A.

The game stopped again moments later when Swanson had to be replaced due to an eye injury, Crosbie getting the call to take his place.
The game never really had a rhythm about it with few chances, MacDonald first seeing a header go wide and Greene hooking a ball wide after a decent 20-yard run.

Rovers came close when Stevenson’s corner came back and his dipping shot from 25 yards flew agonisingly past the back post.

Alloa pushed forward in numbers in the last five minutes and put the Rovers on the back foot, the pressure paid off with two minutes left on the clock, an Alloa corner dropped in at the far side of the area, the ball was cleared out left where Cunningham ran onto the ball and from 20 yards out hit the ball on the full across Brian and in at the back post 2 – 1

Rovers pushed up the park but the damage had been done, Alloa restricting the visitors to a couple of shots from distance.
