THE 1960S NOMINEES ARE:

Willie Polland

1955–1961 & 1967– 970

372 games, 2 goals

Signed from Wallhouse Rose in 1955 he went straight into the first team becoming a renowned left back in the best ever post war Raith side.

A top four finish in 1956/57, plus two Cup semi finals, Polland was transferred to Hearts in 1961 where he won the League Cup.

He returned to Rovers in time to spearhead the promotion push in 1967 and went on to be the rock at centre half during the three years in the top flight. He retired in 1970, turning down the opportunity to become manager, but remained a friend to everyone at Raith Rovers, playing a vital part in the Former Players Association until his passing in 2010.

Bobby Stein

1960–1969

318 games, 15 goals

Signed from Broxburn Athletic in 1960, Bobby was a stylish half back brought into the side towards the end of 1960/61.

He became a fixture of the Stein, Evans, Porterfield half back line and was moved to full back in 1966, becoming a member of the promotion winning side in 1967.

He reverted to half back in partnership with Willie Polland and Dave Millar during the First Division campaign of 1967/68 and was transferred to Montrose in the closing months of 1968/69.

Jocky Richardson

1965–1968,

109 games, 60 goals

The ‘cult figure’ of the nominations, Jocky was a firm fans favourite of his day.

Signed from Lochore Welfare in January 1965, he scored on his debut and so begun a phenomenal scoring record which averaged at two goals in every evry games played. He was top scorer in 1965/66 and second only to Pat Gardner in the promotion season of 1966/67.

Although he found goals more difficult in Division One, he nevertheless started the season well before falling out of favour with new manager Tommy Walker and he was subsequently transferred to Berwick Rangers at the end of the season.

Willie Wallace

1959–1961

73 games, 34 goals

Signed in 1959 from Stenhousemuir, Willie was a striker with a natural eye for goal. He started out as a winger in the side that included Jim Baxter and was converted into a centre forward. Despite his high goals to games ratio he was considered to be the ‘spare pare of breeks’ in a transfer which took him and Willie Polland to Hearts in 1961. It was Wallace’s career which would flourish, winning the League Cup at Tynecastle before Jock Stein took him to Celtic in 1966. There he achieved legendary status as one of the Lisbon Lions. His honours at Celtic Park included two European Cup Finals, five League Championship medals, three Scottish cups, seven Scotland Caps and four Scottish League Caps, one of the best records of any player to have come out of Stark’s Park.

George Lyall

1965–1966

41 games, 31 goals

He may not have played manhy games for Raith Rovers, but the circumstances during his time in Kirkcaldy make his nomination valid. Still a schoolboy when he was given his Raith debut, he marked the occasion with a goal. An incredible 31 goals in only 41 games followed, during which time the Cupar schoolboy attracted attention from scouts on both sides of the border. He was transferred to Preston North End in March 1966, having spent three days short of a year with Rovers, the £10,000 transfer fee still stands as a British record for a schoolboy transfer. He spent the rest of his career in England, winning a Third Division medal with Preston, and later becoming a hero at Nottingham Forest where he played under Brian Clough.

Jim Thorburn

1956–1963

175 games

Legendary goalkeeper who is still fondly remembered half a century on, big Jim signed from Douglasdale Juniors in 1956 and for his first three years, battled it out with Charlie Drummond for the number one jersey. He finally took over in 1960, and despite the team’s downward trajectory, Thorburn was seen as one of the finest custodians in the top flight. A Scottish Cup Semi-Finalist with Rovers, he was transferred to Ipswich Town along with Jake Bolton in 1963. He spent 2 years at Portman Road before joining St Mirren where he won a Second Division Championship medal in 1968. He left Love Street in 1970 for Albion Rovers, spending a year there before hanging up his boots. Jim is still a keen follower of Raith and attends matches at Stark’s Park on many occasions.
