Club Captains
Raith Rovers can confirm that we have appointed Ross Matthews and Scott Brown as Club and Team Captain for season 2022-23:
Club Captain
Our second – longest serving player, and a product of Raith Rovers Youth Academy; Ross Matthews made his competitive debut for the Rovers a month before his 18th birthday, in December 2013.
Since then, he has represented the club with distinction over 230 times and at the age of 26 is now a key part of the Rovers midfield. Ross has won silverware in his time at the Rovers, winning SPFL League 1 in season 2019-20 and the SPFL Trust Trophy last season as captain in the absence of the suspended Kyle Benedictus.
Ross has captained the side several times prior to this season, and is a character that is respected throughout the squad, coaching staff, club employees and the Rovers support.
Ross spoke to www.raithrovers.net about the appointment: “It’s been great working with the new management team so far – it’s a massive honour to be named Club Captain and I’m extremely proud to be given this position.
I have had some experience of captaining the side already including the Challenge Cup Final success last season and I would love to be part of bringing more success to this football club.
I am looking forward to working alongside Scott Brown this season to drive the team forward and help the club finish as high as possible in the league table. As Club Captain I am also looking forward to linking with the community via the Raith Community Foundation and with our commercial partners and sponsors including Andy’s Man Club and The Cottage Family Centre.
Our supporters have a big part to play in driving the club forward – we have always said that they can be our 12th man, and I can’t wait to get back on the pitch with the rest of the team”
Team Captain
Manager Ian Murray was also keen to appoint a Team Captain to support the Club Captain.
Scott Brown has played every minute of all our competitive fixtures so far since signing in June. He is a driving force on the pitch and has instantly earned the trust and respect of his teammates and the club staff.
Scott is a player who captained his previous team, Peterhead, with distinction and has also led the side out in Ross Matthews absence in recent weeks as the Club Captain continues his rehab from an operation.
Scott said of his appointment: “It’s an honour to be asked to represent Raith Rovers as Team Captain, and I’m excited about the season ahead of us.
I’m looking forward to working with Ross Matthews in all aspects of his role as Club Captain, and driving this squad on to maximise it’s potential on the pitch.
We have a squad that is hungry for success and we want to show that on the pitch.
I also want to pay tribute to our supporters – their support has been and will be so important for us all, and it’s great knowing we have such a dedicated fanbase. I’m particularly impressed at the efforts of all the volunteers that help the club out, and it was great to see the group that were helping get the stands ready for tomorrow’s game against Dundee”
