Furth O’ Fife Fans: California
Saturday June 16th 2012
Over the summer, some fans from further afield are being invited to write about their continued support for the Rovers and how and why they keep up with the team, despite living far from Stark’s Park. Gordon Lister lives in California and is the third fan to share his story on his passion for the Rovers …

Hello, fellow fans of RRFC and listeners of RRA!  I’m Gordon (username Whiskerzz) and some of you will recognise me (or my username).

I’m currently living out in sunny San Jose, California. For me, the earliest memory I have of supporting Raith is watching the Coca Cola Cup Final on TV just one week before I was four years old! So, I’ve pretty much been a fan for 17 years now and loved (almost) every minute of it!

My way of finding out about what’s going on with the club is using a few sources. First and foremost, there’s the club’s website, then the BBC Sport page and finally, I use my friends on Facebook who still go to games. Why do I still support my hometown team?  Because it is what I grew up doing and you ALWAYS love your hometown team.

With regards to my favourite all time players for the club.  Honestly, I couldn’t pick just one! My favourite player for the last few years has been Davo.  He is the one player you can count on to play with his heart and soul, week in week out, which means a lot!  Some of my other favourite players from down the years include Craig Wilson and Marvin Andrews.

Now, for a funny story.  I was a ball boy with the club for a few years and at one game against Morton (in fact, the game that sealed the title and we sealed promotion), I was doing my job up at the away end and, naturally, when we scored, I celebrated.  Cue dogs abuse from the away support – best thing about being up there in my opinion!  But that isn’t the funny part.   At one point during the match, the ball went out for a goal kick and the ball ended up on the pitch near to the corner flag.  So I go over to collect it and, for some unknown reason, I decide to attempt a Zidane turn. As you may have guessed, I fail miserably and end up flat on my back on the pitch to a big chorus of “WHEYYYYYYYY!” from both ends of the ground!

For now, I’m just looking forward to the beginning of preseason games and some more RRA broadcasts! Thanks for the opportunity to get involved with the club website and I look forward to reading over everyone’s posts.

If you’re a fan that keeps up with the Rovers despite living far away and you’d like to give your own story, email details to laura.jarvis@raithrovers.net. We’re looking for about 200-300 words, and any pictures you have.
