Yesterday, in the Raith Suite, we held our first get together aimed specifically at serving military personnel and veterans. Under the banner of “Breakfast and a Blether” we brought together fourteen participants who enjoyed a chat, breakfast roll and coffee.
Following discussions with forces charity SSAFA we learned that many serving (and in particular ex serving members) of the armed forces can suffer from stress related illnesses, feelings of isolation, financial concerns and difficulties in adjusting to life in civvy street.
Although we are not able to resolve these complex issues we felt that a first step would be to arrange a get together where people could come along and engage with others in a safe, comfortable environment.
In addition we had representatives from SSAFA and the Armed Services Advice Project who were available to give specialist advice.
We plan to make this a regular event and hope it will grow and attract more participants.
Special thanks must go to John Simpson who very kindly donated the breakfast items. To Lesley Mill who worked hard in the kitchen preparing the food. Thanks also to Gavin Quinn and to Penny Leggat from SSAFA and Lorraine Reid from ASAP.
