The SPFL Trust and Scottish Book Trust have teamed up to launch a pioneering pilot project which aims to encourage kids to read.  Raith Rovers are delighted to be one of 14 SPFL Clubs partnering with local libraries to deliver the 4-4-2 Reading Challenge which aims to inspire children aged 5-12 to read four books in exchange for match tickets.  The project was launched last month, and after training today Raith Rovers players Liam Buchanan, Lewis Vaughan, Regan Hendry & Dario Zanatta called into South Parks Primary School in Glenrothes to help publicise the project.

Whilst there, Liam read an excerpt from “Billionaire Boy”, a David Walliams book. The players also answered loads of questions from the Primary 5 & 7 pupils before finishing with a keepy – uppy contest between Regan Hendry and Lucy from  P7 (who also plays for Raith Rovers LGFC).

Lucy was the winner of the keepy – uppy contest:

SPFL 4-4-2 Reading Initiative:

The initiative centres on a reading ‘challenge card’ which will be issued by participating libraries.  For every book read, children will receive a stamp on the card.  When they have read four books, participants will receive a FREE match ticket for a home league match at Stark’s Park, while an accompanying adult will be able to purchase a discounted ticket.

Although this is a test project, over 200 libraries, marking more than half the estate in Scotland, will be involved, across 11 of Scotland’s thirty-two local authorities.  The project could be extended to cover the whole country if the initiative proves successful.

The project will run at the following local libraries until May 31st:-

  • Kirkcaldy Galleries Library
  • Rothes Halls Library
  • Templehall Library
  • Windmill Library
  • Burntisland Library
  • Cadham Library
  • Leslie Library

Four books for two tickets, it couldn’t be simpler:-

  • Sign up at your local library and receive a collectors card
  • Borrow amazing books and collect 4 stamps
  • Exchange your full card at Stark’s Park on match days for a FREE child’s ticket and a discounted adult ticket, £12, for our SPFL football matches between March 31st and October 31st inclusive.
  • Start all over again!
