Craig Easton’s column in the Fife Free Press 2 weeks ago gave a foretaste of the Keepie Uppie Challenge that Raith Rovers are organising to mark the 50th anniversary of Jim Baxter’s epic performance for Scotland as we beat England 3-2 at Wembley in 1967. Jim’s keepie uppies down the wing as he showboated in front of the then world champions was one of the memorable moments of that amazing day.

The venue is Kirkcaldy Town Square, beside the Farmers’ Market.

It will be held on Saturday 25th March between 11am and 1pm.

Schoolchildren between Primary 5 (P5) and Secondary 6 (S6) inclusive are eligible to participate.

The challenge is to juggle the ball up and down a course and finish by scoring into a goal.

Children will participate in three separate categories:

  • P5, P6 and P7 will start at 11.15am
  • S1 and S2 will start at 11.45am
  • S3, S4, S5 and S6 will start at 12.15pm

Times to complete the challenge will be recorded those with the best times in each category will be invited to take part in a final at half time at Starks Park on Saturday 15th April.

The winners of the final will be presented with a prize at the forthcoming Jim Baxter Celebration event.

Each child wishing to participate should be accompanied by an adult.

Craig Easton and members of the Raith Rovers Player Development Squad will be there to give demonstrations.

Also remember that on the evening of Monday 17th April at the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy we are organising a Jim Baxter Celebration Event. The show will have film footage of that wonderful 1967 Wembley game and other memorable Baxter moments as well as inputs from celebrities who had connections with Slim Jim. The evening promises great entertainment and nostalgia in equal measures. Tickets are now available at the Adam Smith Theatre Box Office Tel: 01592 583302 or online at www.onfife.com
