First Burns Supper

The first ever Raith Rovers’ Burns Supper was held last Saturday night and  there have already been calls for the event to become a regular fixture in the Kirkcaldy calendar. The event, organised by the Raith Supporters Trust, saw over 130 fans enjoying an evening of Burns, Raith Rovers and haggis, neeps and tatties at the Beveridge Park Hotel.

Fife’s favourite mascot, Roary Rover, got the evening started by piping in the Haggis and providing his own unique interpretation of ‘To a Haggis.’ Local author and Rovers’ Board member, Val McDermid treated the audience to an entertaining comparison between Robert Burns and one of the clubs most famous players, Jim Baxter during her Immortal Memory. The night was rounded off in style as fans listened to Raith Rovers’ legends Frank Connor and Jock McStay in conversation with Ally Gourlay.

Raith Supporters Trust Chairman Alan Russell said, “It was a great night with a lot of laughs and we were delighted to see so many of the Raith Rovers’ family getting together to enjoying a night of Burns and football. When we were planning the event we weren’t sure whether there was an audience for this kind of event, but the fact that we managed to sell out and there have already been people asking us if we are going to do it next year had demonstrated that there is. It is definitely something we will consider holding again next year and hopefully it can become an annual event.”

Headline speaker  and Rovers’ Director Val McDermid, who has spoken at numerous Burns’ suppers in recent years, commented “It was a really good night with a tremendous atmosphere.”
